Questions

Please note - this challenge contains a question that is time-dependent.  Within 3 hours of starting the final data stream, send an email to VASTChal2014MC3@vacommunity.org containing your answer to question MC3.1.  Please include a copy of your answer to MC3.1 in your final answer form also. Your answers to MC3.2 and MC3.3, along with your video, are due July 8.

The responses to these questions should be incrementally built, as you (the contestant) acquire information from each streaming data segment you receive.  Your submission will answer these questions in consideration of all of the streaming data segments.

MC3.1 - Within 3 hours after start the final data stream, send an email to VASTChal2014MC3@vacommunity.org containing:

a.       An image showing the streaming data in your visual analytics tool. In this image, identify an event of interest that you intend to investigate further.

b.      The content of the final message in the data stream

Answer

In the map, we marked all the call center data. Colors represent the different level of a matter from green to red. Green represents the lightest alert. On the contrary, red represents the most serious scene. At time 19:44, in the right part of the figure, a red circle marked on N. Alexandrias St / N. Ithakis St. The message is: DIRE EMERGENCY/SWAT TEAM DISPATCHED. From the alarm, we found the conflict near gelatogalore exacerbated. After some minutes, we can see some words in word cloud became larger, such as “swat“, “cop”, and ”shot”. So we infer that the SWAT came to the scene, and the conflict became more serious than before. In the top part of the figure, the word stream shows the trends of the important words that can be assign by user. We assign “swat”, ”cop”, ”shot” displayed on the stream view. We will further investigate the event near N. Alexandrias St / N. Ithakis St.

Figure 1

The final message in the data stream is:

mdata, 20140123213200, gardener4958, RT @KronosStar There has been an explosion from inside the apartment building. Several people are down. #KronosStar #DancingDolphinFire #AFDHeroes,,,

MC 3.2 - Describe the timeline of up to five major events that you discover in the streaming data. This timeline should include information from all three segments of the data stream if needed.    Use specific microblog records and call center data to support your description, but do not simply mimic back the data stream.  Provide a concise description of important participants, locations and durations.  Focus your response on the events themselves, rather than on the individuals reporting the events. Please limit your answer to no more than ten images and 1500 words.

Answer:

The relationship of the re-tweet regarded as a proper measure of the identity of people in a social network. During identity analysis, we found two typical categories which is illustrated in Fig.2(a) and Fig.2(b) In fig, the authors in the center of the graph who take more space are the most re-tweeted user. They turned to be the official blog or a people who directly attend in an event. In fig.2, the size of the nodes represents the number of the blog being post. Notice that there are several nodes which have the larger size but no relationship with others which means theirs blogs are ignored by others. Their blogs are full of advertisement and junk information and which is interesting, most of their username contains the word “junk”. So the messages from @Clevvah4Evah, @KronosQuoth, @carjunkers, @junkman377 and so on are filtered out from our system.

Figure 2 Node-link diagram of RT Relationship (a) re-tweets based (b) blogs number based

The similarities of blogs are also calculated. Two authors whose blogs have the similar content means that they pay their attention to the same events. As in figure4 shows, every circle represents a particular author, word cloud shows the key words of every author. We found that the author in the left side were paying attention at POK rally, in the middle were related to fire, in the right top mentioned black van events, and right bottom mentioned all the events.

Using our analytic tool, we discover 3 major events at that night: pok rally, dancing dolphin fire, black van events that include black van hit-and-run, black van guy shot a police and a standoff between the black van and police.

POK rally

It is held in Abila city park, from 17:00 to 20:15. POK rally Timeline shown in figure 3.

Figure 3

Many people gathered in the park, some POK leading members go to stage and make a speech. At 17:00, the rally started. First, Sylvia Marek, the leader of POK made an opening speech. Around 17:20, Lucio jakab, the leader of Save Our Wildlands took the stage. Around 17:30, a Abila local band Viktor-E play some music. Next, around 17:50, an environment scientist Professor Di Stefano of Unit of Abila delivered a speaking. Around 18:15, also an environment scientist Dr. Audrey Newman, the special guest of POK rally, made a speech on stage. At 19:02, Sylvia made a conclusion and thanks to all the speakers. And then, the POK rally became the concert of viktor-E and end at 20:15.

The rally is peaceful and no violence event happened. Many police went to the park to control the crowd since 17:00. But at 19:40, a cop has been shot near the park at corner of Alexandrias & Ithakis, so police leave the park.

The figure 4 shows the time at 18:20, we can see some big words refers to people’s name on the word cloud, “Sylvia”,”stefano”, and “audrey”. From the history document, we know these names are the top members of POK The size of each word would change since different person took the stage

Figure 4

From the scatter plot as figure4 we found @anaregents, @maha-Homeland, @ourcountryourights, @ReggieWassali, @truthforcadou, @Viktor-E attended the rally and supported the POK. @FriendsofKronos, @choconibbs, @MindsofKronos attended the rally too, but took a stand against POK. Note a person had geographical information @truccotrucco atttended the rally and supported POK, but went to Gelato Galore halfway and be a witness of black van event.

Dancing dolphin fire

The fire broke out on dancing dolphin apartment at 18:40. The apartment is a 6-story building, but no one lived in 4 to 6 floor.

Fire Timeline shown in figure 5.

Figure 5

Figure 6 shows the beginning of fire. It’s an explosive growth of Word “fire” after 6:40 pm.

Figure 6

Abila Fire department dispatched some fire trucks and made crowd control near the department in the next minutes.

Some residents lived in the apartment involved in the big fire such as @GreyCatCollectibles and @martaflores. @martaflores trapped in her room-301 for about 20 minutes, and rescued by a fireman at about 19:00. Figure 5 shows all the micro blog written by @martaflores, and the most important words showing in the word cloud. We can quickly know her thanks AFD and her went to hospital. There are some other witnesses of the big fire, like @yomamma, @dangermice, @Kingwilly, @OnlytheTruth and so on..

Figure 7

The fire was not under control, more fire trunks and police arrived there to control the crowd and expand the evacuation area between 19:00 to 20:00. A firemen injured in the building and be pulled in to an ambulance car at around 20:00. The fire became small gradually. The fire was under control before 20:30. But suddenly, the situation got worse: the top floor of the building collapsed. The fire escalated, more trucks have been dispatch to the scene.

Figure 8 shows the variation of some words. These words reflect the condition of apartment fire. “Fire” and “building” together refers to apartment fire while “fire” and “shot” refers the shooting events.

Figure 8

The fire lasted for more 50 minutes and got controlled at about 21:20. At 21:22, police investigated the fire scene. But the event was not finished, at 21:30, an explosion from inside the building made some people down.

Black van hit-and-run event:

The driver of a black van knocked a car and then hit a man off his bike and drove off at around 19:20 in 547 N. Schaber Ave. APD released the license plate number of the black van at 19:23. The black van escaped along Egeou Avenue. At 19:38, the van drove into Parla Street. The police blocked the black van at 19:39, made it nowhere to escape.

Some people witnessed the scene such as @trapanitweets, @hngohebo_ABILAPOST, @brewvebeenserved. @brewvebeenserved is the owner of a cafe and gave a cup of coffee to the bicycle man. The bicycle man was uninjured. Figure 9 shows the call center data about black van. Using the time stamp, we can found the escape route of the black van.

Figure 9

Figure 10 shows the timeline of black van.

Figure 10

Black van guy shot a police and a standoff scene

The black van stopped at corner of Alexandrias & Ithakis, near some stores. The black van guy shot a police at 19:40. From figure 1, the call center message: DIRE EMERGENCY/SWAT TEAM DISPATCHED appeared at 19:44, we know the condition got worse at corner of Alexandrias & Ithakis. The injured police were in good condition. Ambulance arrived at 19:45 and SWAT team was appeared there at 19:50. The van guy went out and said they had hostage, making the SWAT team withdrawn at around 20:00. APD asked residents stay away from the area and evacuated the crowd. Negotiations have begun between van guy and APD at about 20:10. The standoff between black van and police were lasted for one more hour. At 21:00, the van guy back in van, and then, an infighting of two guys happened. Two guys gave up at 21:07 and 21:14 separately. The standoff was finally over. Two women hostages were rescued at 21:15.

From figure 4 we know, some residents are the witness of the standoff scene. Some are in the crowd of street, and some are trapped in three stores: GelatoGalore, General Grocer and Carly’s Coffeesuch as @truccotrucco, @softitees, @Simon_Haweath, @BoraVerissimo, @prettyRain, @SiaraelSea. Some people simultaneously tweeted the scene, as @megaMan, @panopticon, @truccotrucco, @protoGuy, @roger_roger, @Sara_Nespala, @softitees.

MC 3.3 – Select one of your five major events from question MC 3.2 that you consider to be most likely to provide additional clues to the investigation of the GASTech disappearances.   Describe the roles of the participants.  Describe how other events you identified in MC3.2 may have influenced your selected event. Provide a hypothesis and evidence as to whom you suspect as being directly involved in the GAStech disappearances, either as perpetrators or victims.  Please limit your response to no more than five images and 500 words.

Answer:

We thought the dancing dolphin fire needs further investigation, it can provide more clues of Gastech disappearances. Every time the fire under control and then suddenly got worse. It’s an unusual sign. We infer the fire is crime of arson by some people. We assume there are some bombs inside the building probably in the top floors. The criminals probably still near the area and control the switches of bombs.

AFD dispatches some trucks to control the fire, at the same time, APD police evacuate the surrounding areas. Some residents involved in fire lost their home. Most citizens hope the condition got better soon.

The POK rally made many people left their house and went to the park. The standoff scene also needed many police to evacuation. It may make a lack of police. Also, the rally and standoff scene made some traffic stop which may induce the additional fire trucks couldn’t smooth passing.

As the figure shows, some traffic stop near the standoff.

Figure 12

We infer now the POK split into two factions. The members participated in the rally include: Silvia Marek, Lucio Jakab, and Lorenzo Di Stefano are the “peace party” and the criminals of these events are radical. We suspect @footfinger is a top member of radical. It’s a high probability that @footfinger is the account of Isia Vann, the older brother of Juliana Vann. Isia Vann is a radical that he has been arrested for some times.

After the bike accident, he didn’t say anything about it even he was near the site probably witnessed the accident. As shown in figure , @footfinger didn’t mention any words of POK rally, while @anaregents mentioned lots of names of POK rally as shown in figure 13.

Figure 13

In the twitter, he promoted POK, but didn’t mention any information of rally in the rally time. Other people who support to POK are all mentioned rally sometimes as in figure 14 and 15.

Figure 14

Figure 15

In the figure 16, we discovered the word “van” in the stream view suddenly increased in about 9.pm. So we select a small time period to show the word cloud during the time period. Then we found the word “GUY” in a big size. We clicked the word, and then read all the micro blogs contain the words “GUY” at the selected time period. As the figure shows, we found a message: oh no! Looks likes the two bad guys are fighting! It support our perspective that the POK has some internal conflict. We further speculated that the men in black van is Isia Vann, the nephew of Mandor Vann.
